GM Vugar Gashimov 1986 – 2014

It is with a great deal of sadness that we are informing you of the death of one of the leading grandmasters in the world Vugar Gashimov.

Vugar was born on 24 June 1986 in Baku, Azerbaijan and passed away on the night 10-11 January 2014 in Heidelberg, Germany. For years he had suffered from epilepsy and a tumor in brain.

Gashimov became a grandmaster in 2002 and a member of the Association of Chess Professionals in 2004. He represented Azerbaijan at Olympiads in 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2008, at World Team Championships in 2010 and 2011, at European Team Championships in 2001, 2005, 2007, 2009, and 2011, often being a key player.

Individually he won 6 medals at European Youth Championships, 1 medal at World Youth Championship. He finished clearly first or shared first in many international tournaments, including FIDE Grand Prix in Baku in 2008. In 2010 he qualified to and participated in the ACP Cup in Odessa. His highest position in the world was #6 (November 2009).

His friendly attitude and remarkable games will be remembered forever.
